Bob Felasco is a person you want as a friend, coach, teammate or
official. He is a gentleman, a teacher, a leader, a tireless worker
and a loyal friend. Bob is held in high esteem for all that he has
accomplished for himself, for the coaching / officiating professions
and most admirably for his work with the parochial high school youth
of the Syracuse community.
He was, a North High School class of ’45, two-sport athlete,
baseball & basketball (All – City Basketball), a Syracuse University
basketball athlete, a high school baseball and basketball coach, a
high school and collegiate basketball official, and he competed on
several local baseball and softball teams.
made a positive impact on all the activities in he participated in,
but he reached his high mark as a coach, a highly respected winning
coach. In 27 seasons 1950 –1976 while at St. John Evangelist,
Cathedral and CBA Schools, his basketball teams won 328 of 436
regular season games, a 75.2% winning percentage. The culmination
of those winning seasons as follows:
Four Parochial League Season Championships
Six Parochial League Playoff Championships
Two All- City Championships
Four Central N.Y. Cities League Championships
Three consecutive Section three Class A Championships
His baseball coaching record at Evangelist is also an enviable one,
Eight Parochial League Championships and One All-City Championship.
Reluctant to take credit for his successes, humbly he would say
about his great teams, “ I always had great players”. …….We
all know…. they had a great teacher. He was masterful at developing
young, talented youngsters to their potential.
Bob Snyder, Post Standard Sports Writer wrote on two
occasions in 1987: -“Bob Felasco – Best of the modern day
scholastic basketball coaches…..prep/ college basketball officials.”
“I would argue, however that over the past quarter century,
there has been many fine scholastic basketball coaches….two a cut
above the rest, one is Bob Felasco, the other Jerry
Over his illustrious career, Bob
received numerous awards that include:
The Vic Hanson Medal of Excellence, by the Syracuse University
The Joseph Schwarzer Award in recognition of his outstanding
basketball officiating ability
Induction into the Syracuse Hall of Fame.
Although his coaching and officiating days are behind him, his
legendary accomplishments serve as an inspiration and worthy goals
for those who follow. Bob has inspired and motivated so many of us
and we thank him for that.
